The Baron Next Door A Prelude to a Kiss Novel Erin Knightley 9780451466785 Books

I have mixed reviews regarding this book. In the beginning the author grabbed my attention with the interplay between Charity and Hugh. She is spending a summer with her grandmother after a horrid season in London where the gossipers couldn't wait to tell the tale of her broken engagement. Hugh has come to Bath for the healing waters they are known for and a little peace and quiet. Who knew when he rented the townhouse that his neighbor was an aspiring musician who practiced every morning. Had the writer stuck with this conflict and the delicious tension between the two I probably would have rated the book higher. Instead Ms. Knightley diverts with the relationship Charity has with two fellow musician Sophie and May, who form a trio in order to audition for the music festival. I found myself skimming over these chapters in the beginning and towards the end just skipping them all together. I understand the need to introduce characters the author plans to write about in future books but I felt she was too excessive here and it took away from the love story between Hugh and Charity.

Being married to someone who suffers from Hugh's affliction, I felt Miss Knightley did an impressive job describing not only the pain but the responses from outsiders. Knowing what the future holds added to dark reclusive side of the character. As with other readers, I felt Charity was too immature most of the time and I wanted to throttle her on more than one occasion. To me the story would have rated higher if there were less of Charity's girlfriends and more of the interplay between Hugh and Charity. I even think she could have developed the grandmothers role as well as that of Lord Derington and Jacobson and it would have been more interesting. Because she did not I found the book tedious at best.

The Baron Next Door A Prelude to a Kiss Novel Erin Knightley 9780451466785 Books Reviews

Miss Knightly is coming into her own. This is the 5th book of her's that I have read and she improved with each. Love serials. The reader becomes part of the family.
I was prepared to only like it but the story kept me interested. The h/h push and pull keeps you guessing. No love scene though but it's not needed in the story.
THE BARON NEXT DOOR is tender and grounded and funny and hopeful, with a perfect balance of drama and romance. I love that the hero Hugh has real struggles, it gives his story gravitas and meaning and makes you root fiercly that he will get his HEA. Charity is wonderuflly complicated, shy and yet strong when it counts, humble and still bold when needed. They both felt very real to me and pulled me into their layered relationship. I thought it was wonderful that Charity was given a real passion, that she isn't singularly focused on finding a man to make her whole. She wants romantic love, of course, but is her own person and deeply fulfilled by her music and her friends. To that point, I love that it's not just the beginnng of a relationship between a man and a woman, but also the start of a wonderful friendship between three ladies (the other women will each get their own books hooray!) I was enchanted by the moody nighttime scenes and inspired by the descriptions of the music. I found everything about this story to be lovely. I can't wait to read what's next.
If I could give half stars then this would probably have been 2.5 stars. It is certainly not a patch on A Taste for Scandal. In this story the H is left with a debilitating injury after the war and suffers from terrible headaches. He comes to Bath to take the waters, hoping for a cure and he rents a house right next door to the h. The h is a musician and plays her piano at all times of the day and night, which then sets of the H's headaches. They meet and there is an attraction but the H isn't interested in pursuing a relationship because of his health issues.

What really annoyed me about this book is how the h did all the running. I am NEVER a fan of this type of story line as it always makes the relationship seem one-sided. The H went on being stubborn for far too long and it became annoying. I seriously preferred the Earl (Dering) who sounded hunky, charming and gorgeous. I wanted the h to choose him and not the H because at least he wanted her.

I'm not sure if I'll read the next in the series.
This was a great book. Erin Knightley is an excellent story teller and I quite liked both characters. What better name than Charity to put up with the insufferable Hugh. Well, he has his reasons for being insufferable but . . . The story was very good. And I would highly recommend the read.
The Baron Next Door was an entertaining read. The hero was particularly engaging as he struggled with what had happened to him in his war service. It serves as a reminder that our military people often pay a heavy price for their service whether during wars hundreds of years ago or the current conflicts. The heroine evolved during the story from a self absorbed woman who only cared about her music into a caring and compassionate woman.
Cute. My first Erin Knightley, as a . Shorter than a full novel, perhaps longer than a novella. Heroine is a gifted pianist, in Bath preparing for a music festival/competition. The Baron, living next door with severe headaches dues to war injuries, can't abide the noise, and tries to do something about it. Meanwhile, the pianist hooks up with two other musicians to form a trio for the competition, and of course the other two girls are subjects of subsequent books. Delightful. I especially enjoyed all the musical references.
